A Treatise on Hydrodynamics

The present treatise by A. Basset covers the results of the most important studies in the field of mathematical theory of hydrodynamics in his epoch. Many of the most significant results obtained in hydrodynamics in the 19^th century notable for its rapid development of all fields of the scientific knowledge, were scattered in multiple British and foreign periodicals devoted to mathematics, and buried in the proceedings of scientific societies. A. Basset defined the goal to collect together the results of those studies which were especially interesting from the point of view of mathematics.

The present paper consists of two volumes, the first one covers the theory of motion of ideal fluids and the theory of motion of solids through a fluid. The second volume covers the theory of rectilinear and circular vortices, the motion of a fluid ellipsoid under its own attraction (including a very material of the scientific publication of Darwin on dumb-bell-shaped figures of equilibrium), the tidal theory, the theory of motion of a viscous fluid and the motion of a solid object through a viscous fluid.

Undoubtedly, the book will be of interest to researchers in a wide range of disciplines including mathematics, mechanical engineering, physics and history of science.
